B.September 8, 1870 Coon Island,Pennsylvania D. October 17, 1950 Buried in Omena Hillcrest Cemetery Parents: James Frazier and Mary McLean. Mary trained as a nurse at the hospital of her uncle, Thomas McLean, in Cincinnati. While Mary was in training her uncle brought her on a vacation to Omena, and as so many have done, she fell in love with the area. Mary was among the first group of women nurses to serve in the military. Part of her service was near Chickamauga, Georgia. Mary and Albert Luke Friedlander Freeland met after the war in Chicago, and were married October 8 1902, in Saint Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan. Mary was called to Omena to nurse her uncle Thomas in his final illness. Upon his death in 1903 he left 40 acres of Omena land to siblings, the southern 10 acres to his sister Mary McLean Frazier. Mary gave the 10 acres, which was known as Morning Glory, to her daughter, Mary McLean Frazier Friedlander. While in Chicago, Ruth and Paul, the first two of their four children were born. Mary convinced Albert that Omena was a better place than Chicago to raise children, and in 1907 The Friedlander family took the first spring boat from Chicago with Paul and Ruth (ages 1 and 3)and $80. When they arrived in Omena, their name became first Freelander, then Freeland. Daughters Mary Lyle and Earnestine Dorothy were born in Omena. |
